How to get the dependency information of objects and objects usage period

I need tables and worksheets which can be used to  extract details (dependency related to objects ( tables, worksheets, views, users)

Also my second mission is to get list of IDLE users and IDLE objects that haven't been used in past 30 days and 3 months(Filterable period)

Please let me know your ideas.

  • I want to create a pinboard and worksheet with those TS Tables

  • Hi Ashlin,

Regarding 1st ask, we do not currently have a way to extract dependency details related to tables and worksheets in a way you could build pinboard on top of.
It is certainly one of the infamous asks and team is working to get this into the product.

I can help with the 2nd ask ,
Since TS:BI Server contains data related to pinboards/answers/users -
    we can identify following -
    - users that have not logged in last n days.
    - pinboard/answer that have not been viewed in last n days.

Please let me know if that is something you would be interested in and I can share the queries/answers we have built (on top of TS:BI Server Worksheet) for internal users to track Thoughtspot adoption.

  • I think the only issue with using TS:BI Server is that it doesn't contain the full history, I think it may be the last 6 months worth of data?

So it won't tell you the full list of users etc

It also won't tell you anything about object that's haven't been used at all, because I believe the data is only based from usage?

  • That is Correct Marc Price .
The data retention by default is deliberately set to 6 months (which can be changed).
In case a customer needs the retention period to be more than 6 months, they can reach out to their Customer Success Team and after discussing the predicated memory consumption extra TS:BI Server data will take Vs memory consumed at present, using a flag the retention period could be increased .

Since the TS:BI server is a time series data which is user action trigger based , usage will be tracked only if the user interacts with Thoughtspot.

Regarding tracking and resurrecting dormant Users , For Thoughtspot internally we assume :

    - In case user has not showed up in last 4 months is less likely to appear now and should be considered dormant.
    - In case User showed up in last 3 months but not since last 1 month, we treat those users differently then and not consider dormant yet.
From adoption point of view, we then focus on getting those users back to Thoughtspot by revisiting their use case/data/training needs.

For abandoned objects we make a list of objects which have not been viewed in last 6 months.
From Thoughtspot instance hygiene and data discoverability we then delete all the abandoned answers/pinboards(barring some exceptions).

TS:BI Server happens to be our go-to data source when it comes to understanding and Championing Thoughtspot to our internal users.
Let me know if this helps or a particular use case which i can answer more on .

  • Hi attached are some adoption and usage Pinboards that I setup at clients. There are three under the Augmented Data heading. These require python coding to parse log files and call APIs. If you are interested in setting these up then please reach out to your Customer Support Manager to help. At this point in time dependency information is not available through a public API. I have raised this with Product Management as a request. If this is desired it would help adding weight to the request to raise a ticket through the support portal.

  • Snigdha Jha Can we use impressions?? in my case, if I had an impression value of 0 then, I can remove the users for the last 3 months. right??

  • Damian Waldron I have all of these built and they are really helpful!

  • Damian Waldron But the view which you used Is a custom one right? which tables did you use?

  • Damian Waldron I don't find TS:BI Server in thoughtspot data sources

  • TS: BI Server is a default worksheet. This is not shared by default. Are you an administrator? If not then the worksheet will need to be shared. I create a view on top of this for the following two reasons. Note the view is not mandatory as you can use TS: BI Server worksheet directly and just create the formulas as the answer level.

    1. create some new formulas for re-use across a number of answers

    2. materialise if performance is laggy.

  • I am the administrator. of course and still not able to see it.

  • You should be able to search for it in the data tab

  • Snigdha Jha Can you also please share the queries/answers you built using BI:Server to track TS adoption rate ?

  • Ashlin Rajan Were you able to find TS: BI Server worksheet ? If not, will be happy to get on a quick zoom call. I am sure you will be able to find many insights on top of data source like TS: BI Server.

Ruhi Please find attaches a slide deck I created for us to leverage internally, it shows adoption metrics on top of the data source TS: BI Server that come in handy for efficiently understanding Thoughtspot adoption and give you insights on how to bring back dormant users. Please let me know if you have any questions, Happy to answer here.

  • Sorry, Y'all found it. All good now thanks for the support

  • Snigdha Jha Just a quick question. In the BI Server worksheet, I see timestamp is being maintained at month granularity. not at the day level. is this normal or a part of the configuration setting?

  • Ashlin Rajan type daily into the search bar

  • Ashlin Rajan , The easiest and suggested way to see daily aggregation on a timestamp column is using keywords like `daily` as suggested by Marc Price .

The other way to explore different time level granularity is clicking on 3 dots menu button next to the column name as shown in screenshot attached.

  • Hi Guys, the problem is that I created a view with month level aggregation. it's solved. thanks a lot.
